Hayy creative hub cinema Competition organized by Art Jameel Project and Co Produced With Studio Bound (Jeddah, KSA)
A project with Hicham Bou Akl Silhouettes
In our proposal, we consider that the cinema program should not be confined to its function as a movie theater but rather, should acquire a broader cultural dimension and converse with its surroundings. For that purpose, we believe that the new “independent picture house” requires a new typology based on the idea of a versatile and flexible space fulfilling the various narratives and configurations envisioned for this project.
Cinema as an open cultural space The proposed new typology integrates in the core of the complex a generous meeting and gathering space that staff, artists, and visitors can cross. The proposed design emphasizes the strategic position of the cinema in the heart of the Hayy creative complex by modifying the barriers separating it from the adjoining common circulation spaces.
A cinematographic scenography In our proposal, the cinema itself becomes a scene to be observed by the spectators from the different points of view offered when the retractable wall is opened. The main architectural elements (the seats, the projection room, the screen) are unexpectedly perceived in ‘profile’ becoming actors occupying the scene of the project.
With the new typology of the cinema as an open cultural space and its ability to act as a catalyst, our proposal offers an immersive cinematographic experience that amplifies the role of a movie theater and sets up a living agora, a Saha, in the heart of the Hayy complex.
